Elements of Urban design

The studio process focuses on research, representation of design and effectively communicating it. The studio has three modules which included one warmup study to research about urban design intervention in own city & represent it in form of poster, second module included study and representation of Urban block and third module was design of Urban space. All modules where designed to upskill graphical representation of spatial built environment and communicating it with a strong narrative. First module is net based research, second module is research with spatial built environment study and third module is onsite study, analysis, community engagement and design proposal with design details.

In this study, first task was to select a city with which we are familiar where we had to identify an urban design intervention which was or is an ongoing debate in the city. The city chosen was Mumbai and the site was located at Juhu. The intervention was Phase 1 of about 1.5km length focusing on cleaning of natural water courses of city and expanding public open spaces adjacent to it. This was after 26th July rains which made the city to standstill. The struggle was against BMC and private entities to reclaim reserved RG plots and to clean the nullah. Resident Ar. P K. Das wrote was an important face in the movement. Indian poet Javed Akhtar member of Parliament funded the project by MPLADS. (Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme) Understanding the urban intervention, collecting evidence and information from primary and secondary sources, then interpreting self-perception and inferences about the project. Also a poster was designed as per understanding of the project

After understanding the project, a poster was prepared graphically explaning the intervention. Lower portion of Poster shows the reason behind the design intervention which where Mumbai rains water logging. This water logging happened due to blockage in natural water courses as they were polluted, degraded, and unused. So, the vision of the intervention was Irla nullah revival movement to clean the water course and make it accessible for people and expand lively public open spaces along it. After completion of initial phases, the movement is still on its way forward with “Vision Juhu”

Study of urban block involved studying it from satellite imagery which improved the skill of observing the spatial condition of urban block and identifying relationship between them. The process of study involved identifying various parameter of urban block like block size, urban block morphology, built & open space, scale of built form and open spaces, movement pattern, street pattern, built use and human experience. Study was holistic and focused on representing the objective graphically. The final panel could explain the journey of human experience in different public open spaces with respect to other study parameters. The story starts with a girl name “ Sia “ who is an Indian Urban design student. She is exploring Chicago’s New East Side. The day trip starts in the morning at city museum.Sia with her classmates is reading and understanding Chicago map. The first location of her trip was Chicago river walk at New East Side. Students had to study human experience in open spa

Design of urban space was a study conducted to reimagine on site conditions in Ahmedabad city. The process involved exploring site and identifying opportunities by self-perception. Identifying & communicating with stakeholders to know their interest and concerns. Worked on data collection, analysis, and inference from data. Then selecting potential site for design intervention in the given ward boundary. Framing a vision for the design opportunity, design strategies and designing the urban space. Detailing the design further and communicating it with stakeholders was a learning process.

Existing park area is 3455sq.m. There are two existing entry to park :- Main Entry to park is accessed internally through gaam and another entry which is closed entry has access from Ashram road. Mix of built use exists in the surrounding. The park context also creates potential locations for inviting people. ROW of Ashram road = 30.45m (TP Plan) OBSERVATION Food Vending activities along the edge of park are concentrated at the node of Ashram Road. Adjacent plots have Opaque edge with encroachments and obstruct visual connection. It becomes unsafe to walk along this edge. Transparent Park edge but is visually blocked due to vending activities and encroachments. Shading makes vending at ease along the edge of park but there is no shade along the road. Some foul smell spots near public toilets.

Main entry to park is shifted to make it easily accessible for all. Design involves experience of human senses while moving & staying in the place. Proposed is Paldi plaza at the node which is the first thing seen by passerby, Pond area which is to break define park edge & Temple area with multipurpose shelter

It has Light plaza which has a hologram sculpture in center which creates place identity. To create bond between people & place, traditional patterned tactile flooring with shaded seatings has been proposed.

Fountain which allows flowing water sound and also lowers the temperature allowing people to relax and stay. Visually one can experience different colors because of flowering plants. The design provides shaded zone creating an enclosure to allow people to pause and sit. It has a different play zone - Amphitheatre with rock climbing on its wall, sand pit, Jet floor shower, Blackboard area which gives freedom to childrens to explore, play & create a bond with the place.

Childrens’ play area was an inclusive space with different activities proposed. These activities create interest of children’s and creates their bond with the place. Walkway along the area allows eyes along the play area to have an eye on children’s. Different seating allows people to sit and wait for childrens’. Canopy shades the play area a which creates comfortable environment stay and play. Proposed blackboard on floor gives freedom to children’s to scribble anywhere they want. The play area has water element, sand pit , blackboard, rock climbing & amphitheatre which has more choice and enjoyment factor will invites users to the place.

Pond area provides an experience while moving along the walkway. It allows people to come and explore the place. It provides a pause point to sit & interact. The deck & pond becomes an edge which is visually connected with the park and not just a barrier. Park edge is not just a defined boundary but it is staggered so as to provide seating as well as plantation along it. The walkway is wide and shaded enough for people to walk, pause & interact . There will be kiosks along the walkway which will generate income , invite people to interact.
