Effectiveness of Emerging Innovations in Public and Community Toilets
Public Toilets have always been a major concern during urban infrastructure provisioning. In the contemporary
context, where all the countries are striving to develop smart cities, several scholars and development agency reports
suggest the need to reflect on the existing situation of urban sanitation. The debate on the provision of urban
sanitation services in the Indian context has mixed responses. While several attempts have been made to provide
innovative solutions for public toilets, many criticize the sustainability of these innovations. Thus, a study that
documents and comments on the existing innovative public toilet projects in India would help map the way forward for
public sanitation facilities in Indian cities.
