Development-Transit Integration in Indian Cities with Metro
Today, the Metro rail transit systems have become operational in more than 15 cities across India, and more lines are under construction or being planned. The stations along these metro lines are the most crucial places that act as gateways and connect the systems with the city. How these stations connect and integrate with the city have a direct influence on the ridership and utilization of the system. However, majority of these systems are very new, and are designed with very little attention towards how they connect with the city. And there is very little attention paid towards how the surrounding areas are planned and developed to benefit from the huge investments made in this high-class infrastructure and vice versa.
The main focus of this DRP is to study and evaluate how the cities with these newly built metro systems are doing in terms of planning to integrate the metro systems with surrounding network and development to maximize the benefits from these investments. What initiatives are taken to make Statutory provisions in the act, or in the policies to develop TODs, and how the metro systems are integrated in the Master Plans/Development Plans and the micro level plans to develop TODs around the metro stations.
The study will use publicly available data, plans, dprs, documents, google based GIS mapping and secondary sources to develop an evaluation framework. Subsequently, the students will be expected to carry out online and/or in person observations and interviews as feasible to evaluate the cities/urban areas and the metro systems for their effectiveness for Development-Transit-Integration (DTI)
