Research on distinct coherent built form developed during the 19th Century in Indian Towns
In 19th Century many places were transformed into socio-cultural/ economic/ business or trade centers due to its distinct urban built character. Their form and design exude the character and grandeur of the glorious past or events they witnessed. The research shall entail study of few of such identified places from Indian cities such as: Connaught Place in Delhi, Ballard Estate in Mumbai, etc.
The built form of these areas was designed with distinct character, which is not only successfully implemented but is being efficiently used till present day. These places impart certain memorable image to the city due to different form and urban design strategy adopted.
The research shall involve identification and study of few of such exemplary places across the country which were designed and developed during the 19th Century. The study shall explore the history and document the vision which shaped the planning and designing of these areas. It shall undertake study of the urban form and development control regulations adopted for these areas to achieve the vision. Further, the research shall tap the challenges faced in their execution and how these areas are used in the present-day context.
