Gender Mobility Perspective of low-income households

Urban poor can be identified with the characteristics such low family income, high unemployment or underemployment, informal sector dominance in jobs, poor quality of education and health care, lack of paved roads, no drainage and inadequate water supply (Turner J. , 1980). Transportation has a key role to play in people’s lives; it provides avenues for education, employment and social networking. Access to transportation becomes a critical factor in the overall empowerment of women especially in low-income households, who often find themselves constrained in the mobility sector because of geographic, economic, time and fear-based exclusion. Hence, exploring these dimensions becomes important to understand how transportation can empower women from low-income households by opening up avenues for education and employment.
