Making a real world digital twin for construction
projects.
Derived from the industry 4.0 framework, Digital Twin technology focuses on replicating the physical world objects into digital environment serving as indistinguishable digital counterpart for performing operations
such as system simulation, integration, testing, monitoring, andmaintenance. Due to the dynamic nature of the construction projects, being able to obtain the realtime or near realtime insights over hypercritical construction projects, surely have enticed AECO stakeholders. Though representing physical objects in digital environment is not a new concept for construction industry where Building Information Models (BIM) have been present since decades. However, to qualify for being considered as a true digital twin, BIM needs to be reinforced with realtime information collection points and supporting infrastructure. Considering the current state of BIM adoption in the real world, the vison certainly appears to be farfetched. However, there exist some solutions, when organized appropriately, can manifest this vision of creating a real world digital twin. Initially, this system can deliver limited but most meaningful insights for modern world project delivery including operations, and maintenance. The intent of this research is to demonstrate such working digital twin system through design science approach.
