The Directed Research Project aims to create an early warning system for tropical storms that impact the eastern coastline of India, which is exposed to 10% of tropical storms in the world. The project uses historical cyclone data, population data, and road network data to carry out a risk assessment for the states of West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Over 40.2% of the districts across the coastline are identified as high or very high risk. The study develops a web-based application called the Cyclone Risk and Warning Application, which uses real-time data to render active cyclone storms, observed locations, and forecasted positions, to aid disaster risk mitigation and response. The application is accessible using a laptop, tablet, or mobile phone browser.
