Tapestry of Connections : Berlin Wall Museum

Berlin's map, once a piece of art was slashed down the middle by the wall. However, in its divided tapestry, there existed several checkpoints that stitched; connected the two contrasting cities together.

Deriving from Tschumi’s idea of deconstructing layers of what existed, a wall museum and memorial has been designed. The aim was to excavate historical layers to tell its story. The heavy imposing Rcc cores; have been plotted on site (a palimpsest of the checkpoints that once existed) and are connected by lighter, tubes of steel and glass. Their contrasting natures highlight the variation in the landscapes, lives and overall ethos of the two separate cities.

Predominantly, symbolic of the resilience of the people, the project commemorates the physical; vital connection between the two cities, that existed even through the Berlin wall barrier.
