Orbitalscape: A Place for Veena Makers

Orbital scape is primarily a workshop for the veena makers. Designing a place for veena makers began by observing the process of veena making. Establishing a relationship between Indian crafts and architecture, in this studio, we designed not just a workshop but a multifunctional space for the veena makers in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. This design is inspired by the geometry of a veena. Using the veenas linearity and massing, the design was placed on the site such that the existing foliage on site became the anchor points for the geometry. The central courtyard in the workshop acts as the focal point around which all the functions are orbiting- similar to the resonator of the veena. The entrances into this complex are placed based on functional and experiential factors. The entrance from the East Main road is designed such that the visitors experience the essence of music and veena making even as they simply walk through this pathway, without having to enter the workspaces each time. All the spaces in this project have been designed to satisfy functional requirements and still remain adaptable.
