Symbiotic relation between learning and making

Designing a shipbuilding learning center in Mandvi, Gujarat, celebrates the town’s rich maritime heritage while fostering a symbiotic relationship between makers and learners. Mandvi's traditional shipbuilders share centuries-old expertise, while learners contribute fresh perspectives, creating a dynamic exchange of skills. Using locally reclaimed wood as the primary material ties the center to the region's ecological and cultural context, reflecting its commitment to sustainability. The wood’s textures and warmth evoke the essence of traditional dhows crafted in Mandvi. This collaborative space honors craftsmanship, preserves heritage, and nurtures innovation, ensuring the enduring legacy of Mandvi's shipbuilding artistry for generations to come.
