The studio’s objective was to design a non-conventional workspace tailored to a self-created hybrid profession. Here, the chosen hybrid profession is that of a Bioprinting Experimentalist. This role combines expertise in 3D printing with materials extracted from nature, bridging material science, biotechnology, and advanced fabrication techniques. The resulting building design serves two primary purposes. Firstly, it operates as an Innovation and Research & Development Facility dedicated to the creation of sustainable materials. It includes specialised areas for storing, cultivating, and extracting natural polymers, synthesising bio-inks, and 3D printing. Secondly, the building seeks to foster public engagement and awareness. To this end, it incorporates an exhibition space where visitors can observe the entire process, from raw material preparation to the creation of final products, inspiring a deeper understanding of and appreciation for bioprinting’s potential.
