REVIVING CHOTI CHAUPAR

Located in the heart of Jaipur, Choti Chaupar carries the memories of 300 years of glorious history since the time when Jaipur was established. This100m x 100m of space surrounded by temples and uniformly places porticos and bazaars was a home to many temporal activities like flower and vegetable markets, political rallies, religious sabhas and gatherings, protests and most importantly, occassional processions on festivities like Dushhera, Teej and Janmashthmi. However after the increasing vehicular traffic and congestion the chaupar lost its identity of a functioning public square into a transit hub .
The vision for Choti Chaupar metro station is to revive the square as a public space drawing inspiration from its rich history with a primary focus on pedestrians reviving connections with its surrounding context to create the social experience that is being derived from the leisure, commercial, educational and religious activities.
To address this there is a clear solution of proposing an underpass that removes the vehicular clutter from the chaupar making it a pedestrian friendly space. With making the entire belt of Tripolia pedestrianised there is a major transformation in the way the urban fabric of the city is perceived . The thriving square with its galleries, kund and amphitheatre becomes a landmark on the city’ urban infrastructure, a space that becomes a haven for all the stakeholders. There is an effort of reviving the glory of the activities of the Chaupar in the present and future .
