Aranya : A Climate Research Institute

The Climate Research Institute is a thoughtfully designed architectural project set in the lush and dynamic landscape of Goa. The institute is envisioned to harmonize with the region’s unique tropical climate. Elevated on stilts, the structure mitigates the effects of flooding during Goa’s monsoon season while maintaining minimal impact on the natural terrain. Expansive overhangs provide ample shade and protection from heavy rainfall, enhancing passive cooling and reducing reliance on mechanical systems. The structure utilizes durable concrete for its framework, bamboo for the roof, and wattle and daub for the walls, blending modern engineering with traditional, eco-friendly materials. The plan organisation of the Institute was done on the basis of sun path and wind direction. The arrangement is such that all the different blocks with different functions form open courtyards which creates cohesive and interactive spaces for the community. The name of the project-‘Aranya’, means forest in Sanskrit and pays homage to the lush Goan landscape and the project’s alignment with nature.
