Beit Knesset David

The Synagogue of David (Beit Knesset David), inspired by Louis Kahn’s Mikveh Israel Synagogue, is located in Ahmedabad and honors Rueben David, founder of the Kankaria Zoo. The design features an octagonal RCC composite structure with rammed earth infills, perched atop a plinth-plaza system. The precast system, emphasizing fragmentation and a sectional grid, recalls Kahn’s approach towards a feeling of alienation. Key elements include diffused light through octagonal skylights in lightwells, ventilation via clerestory windows, and climate-responsive design tailored to Ahmedabad's conditions. The synagogue reinterprets Kahn’s unfinished vision, adapting his language and expression to a new cultural and environmental context.
