HALF IMAGINED - A Museum And Interpretation Center

Located in kailash complex in Aurangabad. A monolithic structure has been designed, incorporating a sectional negative of the Kailasha Temple carved into one side of the building. On the opposite side, functional spaces such as a museum, library, exhibition areas, and an amphitheater are integrated. By cutting the kailasha temple in half and crafting its negative the idea was to evoke memory of kailasha when people walk inside the structure looking at the intricate carvings of kailasha negative and mirror the rest half of the temple allowing them to envision the temple as a whole in their minds. The original Kailash Temple’s plinth was preserved to give visitors a sense of the temple’s grandeur and to help them to easily visualize the mirror of the temple in proper proportion. The museum complex and interpretation center are seamlessly integrated into the monolithic design, reflecting the materiality and spatial experience of the Kailasa Temple while reciprocating with the surrounding massive cliffs which creates memory of the original kailash.
