The Rock Quadrum

The program aims to make students think in sections while introducing them to an architectural position on “Contextualism”. In the context of historic monuments, the design approach can be framed by three concepts: Reciprocal, Indifference, and Conflict. In the supposed absence of The Kailash Temple, Ellora, a memorial celebrating the sacredness of the lost monument is to be created.  In my approach to contextual design, I have explored the concept of form-based conflict. This approach adapts existing elements and redefines them through a fresh design perspective. The use of a simple, rigid, orthogonal from — a cuboid — as opposed to the complex, ornamental form of the Kailash Temple was aimed to the shift the focus towards textural richness, the play of light and shadow, and spatial complexity as the primary expressive elements of the design.
