Aranyaashram : The Forest Hermitage

This design carries forth the potential that biophilia has in humanizing a space. In the realm of interior design, the spaces have a huge impact on both human behaviour and experiences. Hospitality spaces mainly hotels/resorts thrive on creating memorable experiences for guests. This process explores how contextualizing an interior space, considers the geographical context, historical factors alongside the local culture. My design takes inspiration from the local context by identifying certain flora of Kalimpong as Kalimpong is known for its agriculture and houses some major biodiversity zones of West Bengal. Neora Valley, Dooars, and Teesta Valley are a few to name. Through careful consideration of the context, including the physical environment, hospitality design can move beyond mere functionality and aesthetics to create meaningful and enduring experiences for guests, while doing justice to the environment and the local community. The results of the research will be used as the baseline data for the spatial design and planning of hospitality spaces based on the biophilic design as a design concept for the well-being of the guests and to create an experience where one can feel the raw and untouched beauty of Kalimpong, neglecting the materialistic factors that govern Kalimpong.
