Darohar Pol Housing

This project focuses on the post-occupancy facility management of Doshiwada ni Pol, a culturally significant neighborhood in Ahmedabad's historic Pol housing system and a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to both rental and owner-occupied residences, Doshiwada ni Pol hosts a diverse demographic, creating a unique blend of lifestyles and daily practices. The project’s objective is to understand the challenges faced by residents in managing facilities and preserving heritage, focusing on areas like waste management, community engagement, and streetscape enhancement. By closely examining the balance between heritage preservation and modern living, this initiative seeks to address the community's need for a safe, clean, and inclusive living environment. The project aims to engage residents in creating solutions that are sustainable and culturally respectful. This includes forming self-help groups and internal committees to strengthen community involvement, implementing waste segregation practices, and establishing safety protocols tailored to heritage structures. Through collaborative workshops, pilot projects, and active resident participation, this project hopes to provide a framework that enhances the quality of life for residents while maintaining the area’s architectural and cultural legacy. The findings and strategies developed here may also serve as a model for other heritage neighborhoods facing similar challenges in Ahmedabad and beyond.
