THE MUD THAT MATTERS

With the increasing urbanization of Surat, there lies a disconnect between the river and the city, especially along the edges with major silt deposition. The community’s historical connection with the river has weakened because of inaccessible riverfronts that are barred with dead patches of silt. So, to activate these dead patches of land and get the people to appreciate the importance and beauty of silt, the aims is to create public spaces that intervene through landscapes that highlight silt’s different forms of aesthetics and its natural role in the river system. The project reimagines Surat’s Tapi River silt as a dynamic, immersive landscape that acts as a natural buffer between the land and the river. By bringing people in to witness the ever evolving character of the ‘silt landscapes’ the attempt is not only to create engaging public spaces but also contribute in ecological enhancement along the site, such that the project fosters in the visitors a deeper appreciation for the river’s natural processes.
