Manek Chowk: A Chronotopic Streetscape

This project reimagines the streetscape of Manek Chowk as a dynamic, multifunctional space that adapts to the evolving needs of its users throughout the day while celebrating its rich cultural heritage. In the morning, the design provides peaceful zones for local residents to relax, socialize, and enjoy a serene environment enhanced by shaded seating and greenery. By afternoon, the space transforms into a well-organized marketplace with designated vendor zones and clear pedestrian pathways, ensuring efficient operations and seamless movement. In the evening, it shifts into a vibrant food market with flexible layouts, retractable stalls, and enhanced lighting to create a lively yet safe atmosphere. The design emphasizes modularity and adaptability through features like movable stalls, adaptable seating, and clearly defined zones that balance functionality with user needs. Improved lighting and wayfinding enhance safety and accessibility, while the overall layout preserves and celebrates the historical character of Manek Chowk. This approach creates a pedestrian-friendly streetscape that supports diverse activities, fosters inclusivity, and maintains the timeless charm of the space, ensuring it remains a vital and vibrant part of the community.
