Industrial Growth and Urban Equity: Lessons from Odhav

Located in the eastern part of Ahmedabad, Odhav has transformed from a rural area into a thriving industrial and commercial hub. The Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) initiative in the 1960s catalyzed its development, attracting industries and a growing working-class population. Its strategic location along two major roads, SP Ring Road and National Highway 47, has enhanced connectivity and facilitated economic activity. Over the decades, Odhav has witnessed the evolution of industrial and residential landscapes. By 2017, developments like the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) workshop and commercial hubs became prominent. Further, the introduction of organized planning in a grid-iron pattern and subsequent residential growth brought amenities such as cinemas, hotels, and public services into the precinct by 2020. The interplay between mixed-use industrial buildings and the emergence of larger industrial footprints reflects the area's adaptation to economic demands.
