Filling the gaps: Urbanising the forgotten urban spaces.

As part of the Masters in Urban Design program at CEPT University, the Monsoon 2024 Master Plan Studio serves as the third-semester project, focusing on large-scale urban redevelopment. This report details the master plan proposal for the 350-acre Calico Mills site in Behrampura, Eastern Ahmedabad, developed under Unit 2 and guided by Prof. Umesh Shrupali. The project began with an exploration of master planning principles, followed by an in-depth site analysis addressing landscape, topography, hydrology, existing densities, and heritage structures. Students identified development needs and opportunities, shaping a proposal that integrates zoning, transport networks, open spaces, pedestrian pathways, urban design guidelines, and phased implementation strategies. The master plan envisions transforming the Calico Mills site into a vibrant urban district that revitalizes the East, fostering growth, inclusivity, and community pride. It includes diverse housing options, dynamic public spaces, and commercial and institutional developments, anchored by an iconic urban forest. Enhanced connectivity, sustainable design, and balanced land use are core features of the proposal. Through studio discussions, lectures, and iterative reviews, the project evolved into a comprehensive and visually compelling plan. This report captures the process and outcomes, showcasing the rigorous academic and practical training offered by the Urban Design program at CEPT University.
