Behrampura, located in Ahmedabad, is a historically significant precinct shaped by its industrial past, particularly the presence of the Calico Mills. Today, it is a densely populated area marked by a mix of residential, industrial, and informal settlements. The Calico Mill area is home to close-knit communities with distinct traditions, neighborhood, men are the primary breadwinners, while women are homemakers who run small businesses from their homes. However, women’s mobility is severely restricted due to safety concerns arising from criminal activities in the mill’s open spaces and social norms enforced by male family members. As a result, women remain within the community. Children face similar constraints, confined to playing in the narrow street outside their homes, as the mill’s open spaces are deemed unsafe. Over time, these gullies have become central to the lives of women and children, reflecting both the community’s vibrancy and the limitations imposed by their environment.
