Vasna: Layers of Urban Complexity

Vasna is a low-rise housing locality in the western part of the Sabarmati River, it is a dynamic urban precinct developed in a grid-iron pattern. Its strategic location along the 120-foot ring road, with a BRTS corridor, ensures strong arterial connectivity, although internal sub-arterial roads are underutilized. The land use is mixed, featuring dense lower-income housing, spacious middle/upper-income developments, and informal markets alongside formal businesses. Public spaces range from organized parks to informal gathering areas, but walkability is challenged by the hot climate, limited shading, and inadequate pedestrian infrastructure. Vasna hosts a socio-economically diverse population and connectivity to workplaces drives household choices. Urban challenges include heat island effects, requiring shading, greening, and water-based cooling. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) invests significant efforts in waste management. Proximity to the Sabarmati River offers potential for enhanced green spaces. Vasna exemplifies Ahmedabad’s urban complexities, offering valuable lessons for climate-responsive and inclusive city planning.
