METROPOLITAN HOUSING DESIGN: Home x Habitat x City

The site is located in the Girgaon and Kalbadevi areas of Mumbai. These areas are among the oldest parts of Mumbai and are witnessing a tremendous number of redevelopment projects. The modes, politics, and economics of redevelopment in these localities are complex and layered, which has led to unfavorable urban conditions for both the inhabitants and the otherwise rich urbanity of these neighborhoods. The studio works with the hypothesis that one of the ways to address this problem is to think through the lens of urban design, especially at the scale of the urban block and at the scale of the precinct. The studio foregrounds the aspects of urban form and urban design in the question of urban renewal.

Design Development

The design encompasses a broader vision aimed at revitalizing the community’s spirit, preserving its cultural identity, and fostering urban renewal. This holistic approach recognizes the inter-connectedness of social, cultural, and economic factors in shaping the future of the Wadi region. It aims to weave together the threads of tradition and innovation, creating spaces that enrich the fabric of the Wadi community.
