Rapid urbanization of the city and its upstream regions has altered the hydrological network of the Vishwamitri River leading to a condition called Urban Stream Syndrome where there is an increase in concentration of nutrients and contaminants which leads to an alteration in the channel morphology and stability. The intent of the design is to alter the hydrology of the river system back to its pure form with the help of constructed wetland systems using natural riparian vegetation. The Design Criteria: 1.Wetland Purification System: • Physical filtration- filter solid particles • Biological and Chemical filtration-dissolve chemicals and excess nutrients • Pollutant transformation- Microbes act as bio-filters to convert nitrogenous pollutants into gas • Flood, erosion and flow reduction- vegetation reduces flow. 2.Riparian Vegetation to restore the river ecosystem • Preserve natural ecosystem and create shelter and habitat for various waterborne fauna 3.Connection between the Community and the river Wetlands can create a peaceful environment for the urban population • Educational Requirement- Teaching the community more about the river and its ecosystem (Viewing decks for bird watching, Interventions to understanding the wetland process and • Recreational Requirement- Bringing all age groups to the river (parks, walkways, sit out spaces, organic/vegetable gardens, gardening) • Revenue Generation Requirement- A module for the upkeep of the Wetland zone (tourist attraction, paid activities, commercial attractions)
