A forest is a large system made of several smaller systems, coexisting together. Some of which are more vivid than the others and help in building an identity to the forest. One of the main causes for this are the dominant trees present in these systems. Dominance in this case, would be the power these trees possess over the species growing around them. 
Such settings identified on the site could act as introductory spaces to the forest. A threshold that introduces the visitors to the indelible elements they would experience on the journey they are going to embark on.
