Housing design solutions that sideline questions of mobility, economics, health, power, citizenship, and aspirations have failed in the past. Nowhere have these failures been more apparent than in high density large metropolitan areas in India. Sheer size and density of such urbanity exacerbates conflicts that are latent in all housing neighborhoods.
This studio explored housing design in core areas of metropolitan city contexts. This exploration attempted to maintain a precarious balance between critical reading of real world challenges and creative imaginations of potential futures. Students were expected to cater to often conflicting demands of housing providers, users, and the city at large.
The main project was a housing/mixed use development in a metropolitan area. This was augmented by various exercises aimed at sharpening critical and creative thinking skills.
