Bengalera Kantha - Vocal Bengal

“Why do we Memorialize?” Is it enough if we just remember the horrific incidents that happened in the past? The project is inspired by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar’s famous quote, “Educate, Organize, Agitate.” As a visitor of the museum, one is entitled to know and be educated about the partitions and its repercussions. At the same time, one must be able to reflect upon the partition themselves within the context of the present, be able to form an opinion and be vocal about it. This very aspect of the expression of opinions and dissent is the embodiment of the Bengali spirit throughout different time periods.

Hence, the design aims to memorialize protests that happened during the Bengal partition. Moreover, there are regular occurrences of protests and riots throughout the different stages of partition, thereby tying into the narrative. Protests are seen as a polarizing topic as one would see it as a democratic form of expression of dissent but the others might see it as an act of civil disobedience. The museum aims to bring clarity among the people on this notion through memorializing the protests during the Bengal Partition.
