Adaptation that changes with Time.Most adaptation theories talk about change for the current times. They fail to consider the needs for future adaptations. ’Typological approach’ talks about change in form- function relationship in which way an existing building will adapt to its functional and aesthetic values. ‘Architecture approaches’ focus on the form/form relationship and investigate various design strategies on how to intervene within or upon an existing building. ‘Technical approach’ looked at adaptation strictly from a technical perspective. ‘Programmatic approach’ is very closely related to the ideas of consumerism and brand imagery. ‘Interior approach’ is focused on soft values of the building which includes its immaterial aspects. These theories do not look at adaptation as a continuous process. A building which is not static, does not freeze in time. A building which adapts itself with time, does not have one defined relationship with existing buildings, does not have one single form or typology. My approach for adaptation looks at temporary architecture which challenges the existing approaches as it serves multiple purposes. It creates multiple relationships with old and new, allowing one to further develop on the adaptation theories. Purpose of the space will be decided by the activity, user, and time and will drive the surface treatment or the relationship. By making use of the existing building structure as a resource and introducing new methods that allow horizontal and vertical planes to rotate, rearrange and replace, one can create new spaces within the same frame. Thus the theme ‘Temporary Architecture’ deviates from most of the theories of adaptive reuse as it allows for multiple future changes.
