“Built form that can breathe”  Breathing in the title doesn’t speak only to visual density and how much ventilation plays into forming architecture but rather the all visual, sensory and cognitive relationships one might experience while inhabiting a said space with respect to what part of the built form plays as inside and what part plays outside. Majority of the form of architecture followed in present day has been either a rip-off of an western building idea or laced with curtain walls for the sake of it( possibly for aesthetic purposes) forgetting the idea of quality of space provided by the idea of a natural relationship occupant(human beings) has towards what is outside the actual built form. In that sense most of the buildings built are formulated as self-imposed cages trapped in need for safety and shelter. Human being has a natural tendency towards nature and hence the desire for outside, while struggling with duality of wanting to be inside/sheltered. Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst speaks about the idea of introversion and extroversion in terms of human behavioral psychology. On these aspects he touches upon human need for being inside while always wanting to be outside. It is never an either-or situation and the there’s a struggle between the duality. German philosopher, Martin Heidegger throws light on how across different cultures human being always related the journey of one towards outside life, unity of being and freedom while wanting to be inside with more practical needs like privacy, safety and shelter. Usually the shelter is a controlled environment one has the ability to manipulate and simulate as per ones needs but human always are drawn towards the idea of freedom and uncertainty. There is always this duality of both needs at the same time, while the physical manifestation of these blurred dualities in architecture are defined by strict concrete lines as INSIDE and OUTSIDE. This aspect takes away the idea of duality and defines it more as either-or scenario taking away the very human nature of the need tackling with this duality. What is inside is defined by the idea of roof, walls and enclosure and the outside is left to whatever is left beyond the boundary of construction. • While the need for the duality is to have more blurred lines or have the regard for the aspect of inside/outside relationship in a way to let the built form breathe allowing the user to tackle the duality as per choice. • The idea is to respect the need of wanting to move and use the inside and outside without architecture acting as a barrier to that need. • To develop singular/multiple relationships of the activities with respect to inside-outside so that the user doesn’t shy away from one’s natural tendency as a human being while catering to his practical needs for safety and shelter.
