The essay explores the deviation of architects from the standard practice set up by the PWD in the late colonial period, through the analysis of town hall’s various details. Batley’s design deviates from the standard practice seen through details in brick bonds and various architectural elements. The introduction of private architectural practice in India brought about the idea of representational architecture. The Swadeshi movement along with the calendar art movement influenced the incorporation of indigenous architectural elements using modern materials and techniques. The culmination of these events and contexts is clearly seen in the design of Ahmedabad’s Town hall.
