Jamalpur flower market in Ahmedabad is a city within a city, a complex chaos, thriving along the city’s newly emerged image, the famous Sabarmati riverfront. It is vibrant, full of life, filled with a mix of color and texture. It is beautiful but only when in full bloom as the withered and ugly have no relevance here. It has occupied the edges of the housing communities around it, claimed it as its own, leaving behind nothing but the rotten and unsightly in its wake. Yet it won't be long before the market realizes what "rotten" really means and when it does the circle becomes complete, the public place finds its larger goal. In response to this reality of the flower market and its vicinity, the primary goal of the program is to redefine the idea of rotten, and renew the community edge with a new identity, for a sustainable future. The aim of this architecture of waste is to explore several ways of dealing with flower waste, creating a strong sense of a public place for the surrounding housing communities and for Ahmedabad itself.
