Perhaps the most famous exercise in tiny space design is the Le Corbusier-designed 16 m2 Cabanon in which the Swiss architect explored the "Modular" - an understanding of the fundamentality of human scale. Today, the tiny spaces movement appears at the intersection of our changed outlook on materialism, eco-consciousness and affordability. They can exhibit multiplicity in usage between camper vans, mobile homes, traditional single-family residences, calamity relief structures and quarantine shelters during pandemics. Whether promoting minimalist lifestyle or provide exclusive weekend rental spaces in the countryside in harmony with nature, tiny spaces offer a range of benefits. With the decreasing floor area in the urban scenario, optimization of interior spaces is extremely relevant.
The studio deals with this design challenge of planning and detailing the interiors of tiny spaces of less than 400 square feet. Students will have to conceptualize the multiplicity of uses for the given brief and site, arrive at interior space planning design. Students will work on TINY residential units. Creative transformation of spaces and designing efficiency will be focused upon.
