Recreational spaces are the typically flexible institutions; they convey ideas of civilisation, modernity, democracy, and economic prosperity. They can also develop the consciousness of art, culture, science, and technology. There is a demand for designers to create something new and iconic. In the design process for such places, the need to place visitors and their specific needs should be at the centre of the design process. It remains rare for designers to establish a consistent focus on visitors. It is challenging to use design methods that make recreational spaces that respond to their context. These spaces must raise related questions of personal, social, and environmental sustainability is of critical. A designer needs to overcome divisions between the built, physical world, and social experience. We can start by recognising that designed forms, design processes, and design sensibility have diverse social effects and possibilities.
Studio Unit
The studio explores the idea of Recreation as making. Initial studies focus on analysing key factors that make a space recreational. The main idea is to represent ideas in terms of Interior, Shell, and elemental level understanding of existing spaces.
The second stage of the design development explored the idea of material as the form driver. The knowledge of materials characteristics allows the designer not only to make the best material selection as a function of its application in a given solution, but also to overcome its limits and constraints in a design path where materials and transformation technologies become variables of the creation process.
Nowadays the knowledge of materials properties is essential more than ever, as for both technical and engineering properties, and expressive-sensory perceptions, in order to produce an aware design and exploit in the most appropriate way potentials and limits of the chosen material.
The third stage deals with fundamental issues of Programme interpretation and space planning requirements of the programme. Recreation refers to all those activities that people choose to do to refresh their bodies and minds and make their leisure time more interesting and enjoyable.
Creating a vibrant culture that attracts top talent, inspires and grows people is leading many organizations to create a more relaxed, spontaneous, and collaborative atmosphere. A fun atmosphere builds a strong sense of community, and it helps counter-balance the stress of hard work.
In addition, the studio explored points related to space planning, form generation, furniture systems, space making elements with the help of interior techniques, material techniques and construction techniques. The understanding of recreation centers as interior space will be further explored through the typology of the project. Furthermore, the design will be reflected upon by analysing design decisions and their impact on users, environment and design process.
In the final stage, the design focus shifts towards colour, materials, textures, and patterns applications as part of the design process.
