The focus of the studio was to develop a shelving unit for Garvi Gurjari, which is a handicraft store using wood as material. The products selected for the same was home furnishing products. Based on the use of the products and anthropometry, the dimensions were achieved. The motive was to make the shelving in a contemporary style, with multiple use of products according to the needs of the store. Using a system of cross struts as the initial concept, the entire structure and joineries were then developed based on the properties of wood and by using triangulation at various places I was able to achieve structural stability. The structure is made of teakwood, and a metal bracing is provided at the bottom for the load to transfer, following the construction aesthetics . With the help of designing this structure, I understood how wood responds to forces it experiences such as compression, tension, sheer force, and load bearing capacity.
