The art of storytelling has lived amongst us for centuries now. It is one of the few things that transcends cultures, race and religion. When told effectively, it can captivate you, move you, become a shared cultural reference, turn into an adage and sometimes, even be transformational.
Type and image are often taken for granted or overlooked, but can be powerful tools for communication when used with a combination of the right context and medium. The Visual Storytelling studio looks at various methods of narrative building through both type and image. The idea of storytelling will be explored through various media, cultures and crafts so that students can ultimately learn to build narratives into their own work. The focus of this studio is how typography and image work together and individually to tell a story and students will explore both functional and expressive typography, appropriate usage for each, how they work with images, as well as exploring the realm of illustrations and image making and making stylistic choices. The intent is to let the students also look at spaces as an output for weaving the stories into.
