Gated communities as the new normal for high income groups : urban development challenges for Indian cities.

The gated community phenomena has been growing around Ahmedabad , most of these communities are the HIG who can afford the commute to the city for work and other purposes. Traditionally gated communities around Ahmedabad were based on caste/religion, though of late we see a lot of new gated communities are coming up as developer driven, where the income group becomes the main criteria for ownership. Not much is know about the formation , convergence or divergence visa-vis other global communities. Is the process in India ,part of the larger economic development & global trends or does the Indian Real-Estate market behave differently?
