Despite global efforts, 3.5 billion people still lack access to safe sanitation, with 410 million practicing open defecation. Tourist towns in India, including Varanasi, face unique challenges exacerbated by increased visitor flows and inadequate infrastructure. This study aims to analyse Varanasi's sanitation system and develop sustainable pathways for improvement. Through a multi-faceted approach, including case studies, framework development, and qualitative and quantitative assessments, the research identifies existing issues and opportunities for enhancement. The findings highlight gaps in the existing framework and propose strategies for a more effective sanitation assessment framework tailored to the needs of tourist towns and a roadmap for improving sanitation services in similar tourist destinations globally.
