Surat (SMC+OG) the thriving city is located in the southern part of Gujarat a major hub of diamond and textile industry. Surat houses a population of 4466826 people according to the census of 2011 and presently 6120000 people with a growth rate of 55%. The city had 954000 households in 2011 in an area of 321 sq.km (SMC) which is approximated to have reached 1600000 households by 2019 within the same area with a density of 13680 (2011) to 18751 Persons/Sq.km in 2019. The area has not increased thus catering to re-densification of the existing city. While the authorities cannot cater to the housing needs of all, the government enables the market to do so, but still, a sector of the people are left behind. This sector of the people especially those who are below the affordability line may need new affordable housing units.
