“Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience, rather than about things. It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe, that we are shielded from the world and [we] allow ourselves to let our guard down,” - Meik Wiking (The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living.)
The project aims to create dwellings while rethinking housing outside of the ideal family household and questioning the relationship between spatiality and materiality with well being, with single person dwelling as a primary situation. The single person dwelling, which sits on the edge of communal and private, or is both confining and liberating, is designed for both isolation and production, shifting between these two states of being. How to make a house feel like home when a person comes back to an empty apartment after a busy day? The objective here was to be able to formulate spaces in a way that the warmth of a home could help support a person living alone and make them feel empowered for being able to live an independent life.
Not only does the current social welfare system and institutions fail to support a single-person household, but the distribution and utilization of resources is known to be restricted to and facilitated for an ideal family household. Especially in a country like India, where the society is still in the development stage it is especially difficult for a single person to find the right kind of housing, catering to their needs and amenities. It is also difficult to find a place for such persons which is in a safe society.
