Chandkheda in Liminality

Chandkheda is one of the areas on the fringe located at north-western side of Ahmedabad city. The given study area of 1 km x 1 km is a neighborhood at periphery of Chandkheda. The precinct is approximately 11 km away from the core urban fabric of the city. The neighbourhood is currently at a stage of liminality. Liminality is defined as “the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of a rite of passage, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the rite is complete.” Neighbourhood's spatial interaction with city, physical attributes and socio-economic dimensions being one of the important factors of development, the publication will elaborate about transition of the precinct leading to the stage of liminality.
