Industrialization in Odhav

The precinct documented in this book is Odhav. It is an eastern suburb of Ahmedabad and is surrounded by Odhav BRTS road in the north, Sardar Patel ring road in the east, Vastral road in the south and Narol-Naroda road in the west. Odhav as a place is well known for the Industries it harbors. Every land has a history and it is expected to serve a purpose. Odhav developed into a GIDC in 1960 as a result of the downfall of cotton mills in Ahmedabad. GIDC had to meet the employment demand of the workers who were sitting unemployed after the closure of cotton mills. This factor led to the demand of residences around the GIDC. The growth of residences and industries led to infrastructure development in and around Odhav. As a part of “Understanding the City Studio”, study and analysis of various aspects/fields of the City-"Ahmedabad" was carried out. The studio focused on an evidence-based approach for the framing and analyzing complex urban development dynamics. The book talks about Industrialization in Odhav and how it acted as an urban generator attracting people and developments. The book further goes on to discuss that the precinct kept growing due to other external determinants.
