Urbanization with an increasing income at disposal
for people, redefines the notions of liveability.
Cities no longer serve as mere employment
hubs. It is implied that good infrastructure, safe
environment, educational and healthcare facilities
are the basic provisions of any city. Furthermore
its residents seek value for money and are looking
at sea changes for a better work-life balance,
convenience and luxury the city has to offer.
As a part of MUP Foundation 2019 ‘Understanding
the city studio’ enabled me to analyse and
document an area of 1 sq.km around the
Shivranjani junction, Jodhpur satellite in western
Ahmedabad to decipher its different layers
focusing on evolution, street network, built
form, public realm, water and sanitation, public
transport, land markets, urban governance and
municipal finance. In order to Develop correlation
among these layers at the city level to understand
its mechanisms and functioning.
Satellite is now amongst the most desirable areas
in the city, given its established outlook. In the
current scenario Shivranjani area is an emerging
affluent neighbourhood in comparison to other
areas in its proximity. Consumption patterns,
affordability, housing and travel choices of the
residents are the reflection of this phenomena.
Lifestyle of people is an important component
of socio-economic balance. In the time ahead,
policy interventions and increasing demand in land
market can result in a paradigm shift. Densification
and a gradual shift of existing land uses into
mixed uses diversifying the character of the area,
are the immediate outcomes of transit oriented
development proposed in this area government
policies, growth potential and the market is
incentivising redevelopment and land consumption
pattern contributing to the affluence in the
precinct.
