‘Understanding the City’ Studio, a part of the Foundation Course of Masters of Urban Planning at the Faculty of Urban Planning, CEPT University. For fourteen weeks through the studio, fieldwork and lecture courses we have explored multiple layers that form an integral part of understanding and getting a clearer picture of any city, with a special focus on a defined one square kilometer area of Ahmedabad assigned to each student. This publication focuses on one such precinct in Paldi- Fatehpura area. It lies at the western part of the Sabarmati river and has been evolved as a major residential neighborhood. The community holds a strong influence on the development pattern and the population of the area. It has got transformed into the isolated style of community-based living, creating restrictions and barriers for other religions. The affluent society today is one of the prime location of the city for housing. With the whole concept revolving around the residential development, the study shows the overall pattern of growth and development which led to high desirability amongst the elite classes to own residence in Paldi. Today, we can see scope in the sight of the redevelopment of old dilapidated to the latest luxurious apartments. It will cater to the demands and give an immense amount of chances to give it a better identity.
