Cities all over the world are different. Each city has its own character and its own way of development. The city of Ahmedabad is located in the western part of India in the state of Gujarat. The city of Ahmedabad is the seventh largest metropolis in India and the largest in Ahmedabad. It is known as the commercial capital of the state and is called the textile capital of India. As a part of “ Understanding the City” studio, the city of Ahmedabad is analysed through 12 different lenses. 150 precincts of 1sqkm each is divided among the 150 students to conduct the study and analysis. Vasna south is located in the western part of Ahmedabad city. It is a residential zone with two major roads, 132 ft ring road and Vasna road passing through it. It is an old village where people mainly depended on agriculture works. Later, due to flood in Sabarmati river, certain slums shifted their location to Vasna south. As the city developed, the slums also expanded. Thus the southern part of precinct consists of slums and the northern part has developing HIG areas. The study looks at this dual character of this precinct and how they differ in socio-economic and urban structure. The study also analyses how this duality coexist in the same city fabric.
