Vadaj - Undesirable but a Reality

Purpose of this studio ‘Understanding the City’ was to observe and understand the fabric of the area allotted to each student. My precinct is located 5kms from the city center.Divided into two parts, Nava Vadaj which is on the west side of Ashram Road Juna Vadaj on east connecting 132ft ring road in the north. Site is well connected by public transport as there are two BRTS stops on the ashram road Ramapir No Tekro and N R Patel park, Bhavsar Hostel on the west and Ranip Crossroad on the east of 132ft ring road. Nava Vadaj is mostly a residential area which has building and bungalows with different typologies including LIG/ MIG housing, private bungalows, High rise buildings, AMC recreation while on the other side is the Ramapir No Tekro a large informal settlement.Though Services are distributed equally, employment is a continuous problem in Ramapir Tekro while Nava Vadaj is well-to-do and peaceful. Most of the people living in the informal settlement are Rag pickers, Day labors, Auto drivers, etc. Clear contrast of formal and informal settlements is visible. Slums are not a problem in this area, they are a solution for families who cannot afford the house. Both equally important for the healthy functioning of the economy. For example, Auto drivers, Rag Pickers, etc. form an important part of a community in the area. The main purpose they reside in these slums is because the living conditions are much affordable than the other part of the area and there is a good scope of business.
