This portfolio forms the compilation of the coursework conducted as a part of the ‘Understanding the City’ Studio. The scope of this study is defined by the selection of a study area (precinct) of one square kilometer located in Kandivali situated in the suburb of Mumbai. This precinct is considered as a representative example and various aspects of the city are explored and analysed by using an example of this precinct. The determinants of physical qualities and intangible livelihood characteristics are analysed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the region. The focus of this portfolio will be describing the characteristics - both tangible and intangible of a precinct located adjacent to a transport node in the metropolis of Mumbai. It begins with articulating the physical qualities and their determinants through mapping of the region and then moves on to analysing the intangible aspects through primary surveys and census.
