Surat Development Plan – 2046

"Envisioning Surat as a compact city "

The development plan studio delved into the process and methodology of creating a comprehensive plan for Surat. The plan was developed based on a thorough analysis of the city, its current issues, and challenges while paying attention to its potential in terms of economic, social, and environmental benefits.

Surat has a polycentric urban structure with polycentres such as Olpad, Kim, and Pipodara showing an increasing participation of the workforce and significant changes in spatial development, while the core of the city has substantial potential for densification. The ideas outlined by SIO and ESA point to Compact Urban Development.

The development plan was made for the horizon year 2046 while also taking into account a larger vision for the year 2070 where towns in close proximity, such as Bharuch-Ankleshwar and Navsari, can function as a robust satellite cities through planned connectivity and integrated development strategy. All of this has been made based on research and insights from the strengths, issues as well as opportunities of the city with a focus on a compact city approach that prioritizes efficient infrastructure, accessibility, and robust connectivity.
