Tier III cities, such as Vadodara, continue to have poor public transport facilities with a simultaneous increase in real estate costs. This has caused people to move to the outskirts and away from their work places. Hence, the commute has increasingly become longer and an integral part of the day to day routine. The City bus and the Rickshaw have been the two main modes of transport within the city. Along with that large number of people tend to use two wheelers such as cycles, bikes and scooters for their commute. In this situation we see an opportunity of making an Insert which is a shared space amongst all commuters working as an Interchange node between the modes of travel mention above. The studio will focus on three things:
First, the students will have to observe and analyze the site to understand the need and nature of the ‘Insert’. Second, the student will have to develop a program that facilitates the commuters by adding value to the shared experience of their commute. Third, the student will have to engage in Making of this proposal through investigations into material and construction techniques. In this process, students will also have to address the issue of accessibility, durability and ease of usage of this space. Eventually, the studio aims to create an integrated interchange node between different modes of transport.
